Jason is a depressed fellow only to make things even worse, this poor guy loses his mum. Feeling suicidal and depressed is no laughing matter. I felt much sympathy and compassion for Jason. I was pleased that it was such a fast read because the suspense and twists made me so curious and impatient to find out what Jason would do next and how things would end for him. And boy- oh -boy what an ending. If I can say two things about Shaw it is that he knows his horror and he knows how to blow us away with his shocking and unexpected ending!Product details

The Funeral An Extremely Twisted Short Story (Audible Audio Edition) Matt Shaw Julian Seager Matt Shaw Publications Books Reviews
Jason is a sad and depressed guy. He feels like he's failed at life and wants to end it all. Only, it's obvious he doesn't. Every type of suicide he considers, he finds a way to dismiss it. Drowning, too pruney. Hanging, could end up in wheelchair instead. Slitting wrists, could botch it and leave hideous scars, plus yuck blood..
He ponders it all and decides to go ahead and give himself a week to get it all figured out and clean up his affairs...for his mom's sake mostly.
A tragedy happens which turns things around for him, gives him a new and different kind of grief and maybe even a little appreciation for his own life after talking to a kind and humble vicar.
THIS is a Matt Shaw story and so of course there is a sick little twist at the end!!
The story through a good part is actually quite touching as we are introduced to Jason who's very down in life and his relationship with his mother has deteriorated to resentment, grudges, and constant fighting. Then when she dies he begins to reflect on what a horrible son he has been at times and all that she'd done for him. Remembering the wonderful times growing up and that despite all the bad he loves and misses her. We are introduced to the Vicar who really helps him get through the tough time and arrange all the funeral proceedings. Really a truly emotional opening and you know the horrific twist is gonna hit, and it does most wonderfully. I won't spoil the wonderful twist but I highly recommend this story. A pure 5 stars and purely enjoyable.
Jason is a character that I can relate to.
He’s going through a bad time in his life right now. He is consumed with destructive thoughts, and wrestling with personal demons.
When Jason answers a late night phone call that gives him an ‘unexpected distraction’ from his self destructive thoughts, it’s time for us to take another ride on that emotional roller coaster!
It is so easy to see parts of myself in Jason, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who will feel this way.
I often find myself wondering if parts of certain stories are based on real events in the author’s life. I did that a lot in this book, especially when Jason thought about moments of happiness that the he shared with his mom. (Matt – go hug your mom!) Not every memory is a great one, there are regrets – just like real life.
The ending was a very unexpected script twist! Trust me… this is one that you wont see coming.
*BONUS POINTS for the gas oven incident!!
*EVEN MORE BONUS POINTS for Jason’s reasons to dismiss each method on the internet’s ‘top ten’ list.
What a scam! There was nothing in this book remotely twisted, scary, interesting, provocative, or "as advertised."

There was. Nothing I.
Twisted.
This book had me from the beginning for the struggle I've been dealt with over the years living with depression. But I really enjoyed the ending.
Tales from the Darkside or a Tales from the Crypt episode.
The cemetery had a sign that, which each letter, spelled "Ghouls" acrostically. A sort of acrostic poem/statement.
I do love me some good short, short horror stories.
Huge fan, Mr. Shaw!
